Session 1 Starts Tuesday, September 21
Cambridge Connections afterschool enrichment program and homework club will be starting Tuesday, September 21. The first session ends Thursday, October 21. Cambridge Connections runs from 2:30 - 4:30 Tuesdays - Thursdays. All students receive a free snack provided by The Abbey Group before beginning their enrichment activities for the day. If your child does not feel s/he is getting enough to eat, please pack him/her extra food to bring to school, as we cannot give seconds. Enrichment activites begin at 2:45 and have been extended this year to over an hour. There are many wonderfully engaging classes being offered from Bike Shop (bike maintenance) to Spanish for beginners. Students may leave after enrichment at 4:00 if they are not enrolled in homework club and are either being picked up in the lobby or are going to CAP. There is bussing for students staying for homework club. Students who are enrolled in homework club will spend half an hour, from 4:00 - 4:30, working on their homework, reading, and/or practicing math facts. While younger children may not have enough homework to fill thirty minutes and will get in some extra reading, older students may not complete all of their homework in this time. The homework club teacher will encourage older students to work on their most complicated homework at school where they will have support and will help students develop plan for completing their homework at home.
Sign up for the first session is CLOSED. If you would like information on how to sign your child up for the second session, please contact me. You may also contact me if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for Cambridge Connections.
Sincerely,

Summer Program, week 1
Dear Parents,
Thank you and thanks to your children for a wonderful first week of summer school. All the students are engaged in learning activities both in tutoring and enrichment. Everyone has made good choices, been safe, and well behaved. For your information, I have included the summer school behavior rubric.
Bussing and transportation are going smoothly. If you know of a change in your child’s transportation or attendance plan in advance, please call my office at 644-8821 ext. 143 and let me know. If you leave a message, I will get it by 7:00 a.m. If we can avoid unnecessary bus stops, it saves us money in fuel costs. If we know you child will not be here a day in advance, we can plan accordingly for snack and lunch.
Many thanks to those of you who have made donations to the program. Your contributions will help pay for a special guest. On July 21, we will be visited by the Solar Bus! Families of summer school students are invited to come hang out and check out this very cool, solar powered creation. Here is the website, if you’d like a preview of what’s to come. http://www.solarbus.org/index.shtml.
This week in enrichment we played cooperative games, learned to identify trees by their leaves, made leaf rubbing journals, explored temperature and made thermometers, listened to a storyteller, received free books, played composting games, and picked and tried radishes from our garden.
During the tutoring sessions, your son/daughter has been using a web-based program called Study Island. This resource is used to prepare students for the state standardized tests (NECAP) in the areas of reading and math. Many students have already enjoyed using this website at home. If you have Internet access, we encourage you and your child to give Study Island a try. Using this program will improve reading and math skills and help student become familiar with the state testing language and format that they will see this fall. Please feel free to contact Study Island at 800-419-3191 or support@studyisland.com if you have any questions.
Using Study Island from Home
The program is divided into sections based on subject (math, reading, etc.). Each section is made up of 10 to 25 topics. Each topic contains about 20 to 25 questions with explanations. All topics are accompanied by a lesson, which includes some brief information about the material covered by the questions in the topics. It is helpful to view the lesson before answering the questions in the topic.
Follow the instructions below, in order to use the program:
1. Go to www.studyisland.com
2. Enter your username and password at the upper-left of the screen, and click “Login”.
Note: Students received a username and password from their teacher at summer school.
3. Click on the section tab (math, reading, etc.) that you wish to work on.
4. Click the "Pretest" in order to begin the pretest for the section. You must complete 10 pretest questions before moving on to the topic in the section.
5. Once you complete the "Pretest,” you may work through the remainder of the topics in any order you like. You must "pass" all topics before taking the "Post Test".
6. To pass a topic, you must satisfy the topic’s passing requirements which are based a minimum number of questions answered (usually 10) and a minimum percentage correct (around 70%). A blue ribbon icon is displayed next to all passed topics.
7. Once you have passed all the topics in the section, you have to pass the "Post Test" for the section before the section is complete. Ignore this step if the section has no "Post Test".
8. When you pass all topics in all sections, you have completed the program and will be well prepared to take the state NECAP test in the fall.
A fact fluency program called FastMath is new to CES this summer. This program individualizes student fluency and mastery of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. Typically, at the start of each academic session students practice their math facts for 10 minutes. Reports can be generated to show individual progress. This program is not available on-line and can only be accessed at CES.
Some students have also been using a program called Read Naturally. This program individualizes instruction in the areas of reading comprehension and fluency. Cambridge has an on site license for this program and unfortunately it cannot be accessed at home.
Grade 3-6 students are using NECAP practice tests and release tasks. These tasks are set up in a test format including both multiple choice and extended responses. Students are using strategies such as elimination in order to answer multiple choice questions. They are also using student work and rubrics to write and score extended responses to the open ended questions.
Reader’s Theater and individual reading provides students the time to practice fluency and comprehension. The students also enjoy playing a variety of math games. Ask your son/daughter to teach you how to play SKUNK, TRASH CAN FRACTIONS, and O’NO 99, which exercises mental addition and subtraction skills.
Wednesday, July 7th the students were able to attend a story telling presentation. After the presentation they were allowed to choose two brand new books to take home. We’d like to thank the nonprofit organization called CLIF (children’s literacy foundation) for providing this experience to all the students attending summer school (academic and enrichment).
Next week’s enrichment activities are:
Monday – 2010 Summer Games
• Baseball and free play (horseshoes, golf, bubbles, and more)
Tuesday – Nature Exploration and Creation
• Watch a short segment of artist Andy Goldsworthy’s film “Rivers and Tides” and create art with natural materials.
• Make “boats” with natural materials. Race the boats down the brook.
• Wear clothes to splash in the brook and/or bring a change of clothes and a towel. Students’ attire must be in accordance with CES dress code. NO BATHING SUITS.
Wednesday – Fun in the Sun, a Solar Adventure!
• Students will explore the greenhouse effect through scientific investigation.
Thursday – Grow Ahead
• Gardening with Sarah from Green Mountain Farm to School program
Next week’s menu:
Monday – Snack is pretzels and cheddar. Lunch is a turkey sandwich with carrots, an apple, and milk.
Tuesday – Snack is raisins and peanuts. Lunch is a chicken breast wrap with celery, an orange, and milk.
Wednesday – Snack is pepperoni and cheddar. Lunch is a ham salad roll with cucumbers, applesauce, and milk.
Thursday – Snack is celery and peanut butter. Lunch is salami on a bagel with carrots, a fruit cup, and milk.
